MEET DOMINIC THIEM

Every year of his career so far, Dominic Thiem has done what the hype has suggested he should do, and more. A prodigious talent as a teenager, Thiem reached No.2 in the junior rankings, and has built on those foundations ever since turning pro. Upon receiving wild cards into Kitzbuhel and Vienna in 2013, Thiem reached the quarterfinals, beating one of his idols, countryman Jurgen Meltzer along the way in Kitzbuhel. In 2014, he came to the attention of many by very nearly beating Andy Murray in Rotterdam, but it was in 2015 that he strung it all together. Thiem won four ATP titles, and did the same again in 2016 when he also beat Andy Murray to win Tie Break Tens Vienna for $250,000. He also reached the semi-finals of the French Open, drawing gasps from the crowd for the power of his groundstrokes and serve. He lists his forehand as his favourite stroke, but it is his single-handed backhand that receives the headlines, for its artistic impression as well as its devastating results. A fanatical Chelsea football fan, Thiem arrived at The Queen’s Club a couple of years ago wearing the blue jersey of his favourite team.

‘Tie Break Tens has a great future. It’s a great format and a lot of fun. The final I had with Andy Murray was really tense, serious tennis and I would love to play it again.’

TIE BREAK STRENGTHS

FEARLESSNESS

Thiem has bulldozed his way through the rankings, unconcerned by the names he has faced along the way. Roger Federer on grass and Rafael Nadal on clay are among his victims in 2016.

ONE OF THE BEST ONE-HANDED BACKHANDS IN TENNIS

The wind-up, the crisp, clean ping off the strings, the extravagant, flourishing follow-through. The Dominic Thiem backhand is a joy.

HOME SUPPORT

As the man carrying the hopes of Austria wherever he goes, Thiem is assured plenty of support in Vienna. That might make all the difference in a tight tie-break.
