In truth, you probably feel as though you already know John McEnroe. For nearly four decades, the 56-year-old from New York has been part of every tennis lover’s life. Whether ghosting to the net to play impossible-looking, angled touch shots, to clenched fists in celebration at yet another point, match or title-winning serve, to exploding with rage when wronged by officialdom, we have grown up with McEnroe. Now, as silver-haired sage in the commentary box – the best in the business in the view of most – McEnroe has reinvented himself. But boy, can he still play. Winner of seven Grand Slam singles titles, including three at Wimbledon, McEnroe was also No.1 in the world for 170 weeks and part of five winning US Davis Cup teams. He has been the star attraction in Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall for nearly 20 years, cheating father-time by playing sensational tennis. He is also a keen guitar-player, father to six, and married to the singer, Patty Smyth.
