MEET LUCAS POUILLE
Lucas Pouille has quietly made his way into the upper echelons of the tennis world, but he is making himself heard now. The French player, who started playing sport as an 8-year-old and grew up admiring Roger Federer, spent the 2016/2017 off-season training with the great man in Dubai. On the tennis circuit the year before, he came of age, winning his first ATP title (Metz), winning more matches than ever before, and being voted Most Improved Player of the Year. He reached the semifinals in Rome, and quarterfinals of Wimbledon, but, it was his big win at the US Open that will be forever remembered. With Rafael Nadal coming back at him to set up a 5th and deciding set, many might have wilted. Not Pouille – he outlasted the 14-time Grand Slam champion 8-6 in a final set tie-break.
‘I’ve been playing well during the last week and I’ll try to keep this level. I can’t wait to play the Tie Break Tens and I’m sure that we will have a very good time. I’ve seen there is an spectacular field so I’ll need to give my very best from the first ball.’
TIE BREAK STRENGTHS
He possesses every shot in the book and then a couple of extras for good measure. When Pouille gets ‘hot’, watch out.
While Pouille’s talent is the first thing that catches the eye, this is the man who beat Rafael Nadal in a final-set tie-break at the US Open in 2016. He can handle it.
Pouille plays his best tennis when all eyes are on him. In Tie Break Tens there are no other distractions. He can take centre stage and flaunt his talent.
